top tips to reduce waste

10 Tip to Reduce Waste and Eco Organise your Home

With energy costs increasing and talk of increasing recycling costs, due to China closing its doors to the worlds waste, there are many ways to reduce waste energy costs and eco organise our home, without costing the earth.

  1. Put a lid on it

When boiling a pot of water for pasta, put a lid on it, this simple act saves energy, time and money

  1. Like with like

Place cooking pots and pans on a hob/burner closest to the size of the pot, a big pot on small burner uses more energy to heat or cook, likewise a small pot on big burner, waste energy and can burn your hand, with gas flames licking the sides of the pot you can burn your hand when picking it up. Getting to the festival

The Boroondara Village Festival is being held on the same day as the Glenferrie Festival, so public parking will be limited in the area. Glenferrie Road will also be closed between Barkers and Burwood roads during the festival.

To avoid traffic congestion, we recommend you either take public transport or take advantage of our free bike valet service.

Public transport

Train – Alamein/ Belgrave/ Lilydale lines (Arrive at Glenferrie Station, walk 2 mins south along Glenferrie Rd then turn left into Burwood Rd.)

Tram 16 – Melbourne University to Kew (Alight at stop 52.)

Tram 70 – Docklands to Wattle Park (Alight at stop 32 and walk north on Glenferrie Rd for 5 mins until you get to Burwood Rd. Turn right and walk 1 min east along Burwood Rd.)

Tram 75 – City to Vermont South (Alight at stop 32 and walk north on Glenferrie Rd for 5 mins until you get to Burwood Rd. Turn right and walk 1 min east along Burwood Rd.)

Bike valet service

Ride your bike to the festival and park it for free in a secure area near the Hawthorn Arts Centre.

You’ll be issued with a ‘claim check’ in exchange for your bike and our staff will guard them in a secure corral. When you’re ready to leave, present your ‘claim check’ and get your bike back.

The bike valet service is located on Burwood Rd next to the Hawthorn Arts Centre. The service is available from 12 pm to 4 pm.

A- Z recycling guide

A-Z Responsible Recycling

Recycling doesn’t always mean throwing stuff in the wheelie bin at the curb, we can recycle at home or in the office to extend the use of a product before placing it in the bin. Let’s not forget that our local government and authorities cannot recycle everything.

To help you declutter and responsibly dispose of your unwanted items we have created an A-Z of how to responsible recycle or donate your unwanted stuff. From recycling cars to hair, lets’ turn our clutter into opportunities for people in need.

Reduce waste and your carbon footprint

How to reduce your recycling carbon footprint

The waste we generate is no longer considered rubbish or trash to be throw into landfill; and rightly so. A great number of nations including the USA, UK and Australia cannot keep up with volume of their waste, so what do you do; we ship to places like China and 3rd world countries to deal with our problem.

China has recently informed the world

“By the end of 2017, imports of mixed paper, scrap plastics, including PVC, PET, polyethylene and polystyrene, basically a lot of packaging material, will be banned from entering China. Industry bodies have called the measure “devastating”. Source:-Raconteur

On a recent research trip to the UK I heard lots of talk around reduce, reuse and recycling. One major supermarket; Iceland is vowing to eliminate plastic on all own-branded products and Prime Minster Theresa May pledging to eliminate all avoidable plastic waste within 25 years as part of the government’s environmental strategy.

All positive but how can we make our waste a valuable commodity? Continue reading

Stop Christmas Clutter

Rethink Christmas- Reduce, reuse, recycle and reward ourselves

Christmas can be stressful enough with more stuff cluttering our homes, when we rethink Christmas and we can reduce stress, waste and help our planet

As Eco Organiser® writes this blog, stores are spruiking it’s less than 3 weeks to Christmas, their shelves are heaving with decorations and gifts for sale.

In other words they are saying – Buy Now! Consume! Don’t miss out!

But do we really need to ramp up our consumption of ‘stuff’ just because it’s Christmas?  Let’s just take a step back from that traditional Christmas gift list and rethink. Continue reading
